Ever since Laken ran out on Lessa in the courtyard he hadn’t been feeling like the normal Laken. Sure he was still nice to everyone that he met and he still had a smile on his face at the appropriate times, but there was something off about it. He was always lost in thought with a confused look on his face. It had been a week since he ran away from her and people were starting to notice that something was up with Laken. There were few people that actually brought it up, but when they did Laken would put on a smile and tell them everything was fine even though Laken knew they weren’t convinced.
After Laken had abandoned Lessa at his special spot he went to his room. He stayed locked in there and was awake all night in the same spot curled up trying to figure out the thoughts swimming in his head. Of course he should be used to many thoughts stuck in his head, but this time they didn’t belong to anyone else, they were his. He thought of what happened with Lessa, he thought of his parents, he thought of his 4 years on the streets, and he thought about his stay at the school. Laken thought of every aspect of his life and not once could he find any sign of someone loving or caring for him until Lessa.
The day after the incident with Lessa Laken didn’t leave his room he just sat in there thinking. People were curious as to why Laken wasn’t leaving his room and he could hear them when he stood by the door, thinking why he hadn’t come out yet. Occasionally a few people would knock on the door and ask him to come out to hang out, but Laken would just ignore them. Finally Laken stopped thinking, not because he had arrived at a conclusion but because he had passed out on his bed from lack of sleep. When he woke up though, the thoughts were still there.
Finally Laken decided that maybe other people’s thoughts could distract him from his own. It worked for the first couple days but eventually people started to notice how he would space out and how his mood had changed. Soon enough his own thoughts became to overwhelming to be overshadowed by everyone else’s. Laken knew he had to deal with them, but he still couldn’t understand what was going on, he needed help, but who could help with what was going on in his head?
So Laken kind of went by in a half in reality, half in his head kind of daze. Some people didn’t notice that Laken wasn’t listening to them half the time or that the kindness in his voice was off. However some people did and people were starting to wander what was wrong with the infamously nice and friendly Laken Toss. Some people thought that he was sick; others thought that he was in trouble with something bad, and some more thought that he was just losing it. Laken wasn’t sure what was wrong with him, but maybe they were right, maybe Laken really was losing it.
The week since Laken deserted Lessa his sleeping has been thrown off from that night of not sleeping. Right now it was Dinner time for everyone else, but Laken had just woken up and was making his way into the Dining Hall for some Breakfast/Dinner. His hair was wild, making it obvious that he had just woken up, his eyes had bags under them from lack of sleep, and his skinny jeans and green flannel shirt with rolled up sleeves were a wrinkled mess. In short Laken looked a mess and he could hear the speculations going on in people’s minds.
After grabbing a plate of spaghetti and meatballs as well as a liter can of Full Throttle Laken made his way to a deserted table and sat down. For once no one sat by him or approached him, but a few people gave him curious or worried glances, which he ignored. Laken hadn’t even touched his food, he was just sitting there drinking his energy drink, the only things that kept him awake while his thoughts drained him. Sighing Laken rested his forehead on the palms of his hands, trying to figure out what the hell was happening inside of his head.

"I.. I.. uh.." Laken stuttered and then burried his face in his knee's like they had been moments before. He sat there for a moment before he ever really did anything else. Then he stood to his feet with this scared look on his face, said the words 'I'm sorry' over and over again and then turned and basically ran away. That was the image that had been playing in Lessa's head for the past week. The image that Lessa couldn't get away from if she tried. The image Lessa had even dreamed about a couple nights. It was insane and she was more hurt then she could have ever explained. The week had pretty much rolled by in one big dull for Lessa. She didn't attend any of her classes the day after, but the second day she knew she had to get up and face the world.
And Laken. Though the second one had been easier then Lessa thought. He hadn't shown his face much and Lessa had heard around school that Laken hadn't been his normal self. He was still nice Laken but there was something off about him, something that no one could understand. Lessa, however, knew exactly what it was. He was a coward and he wasn't as nice as he pretended to be. She couldn't even begin to explain how ticked off she was. She had promised herself that she wouldn't be mad but she couldn't help but be a little.
She just couldn't understand how nice, sweet, friendly Laken could do that to her. Not only did he run away from her, totally hurting her feelings in the process but he had also avoided her for the past week. Which after what he had done and the way she had felt it was probably a good thing he had avoided her. Which even know if she had seen him she didn't really know what she would do, or say to him.
As luck may have it, fate intervened. Lessa had promised her friends that she would eat lunch with all of them today, catch up on the happenings of the past week and why Lessa had been acting different. She wasn't really sure if she'd answer them truthfully though, and no one would be the wiser if she didn't. It had all been going great until she was sitting there with her friends, talking and giggling as they always did and she just so happened to look up, seeing the one person she hadn't really wanted to see.
Laken Toss. He looked like hell which made Lessa feel a little but better, if only for a few seconds. She could tell that he had just woken up and that he was a mess. Quite literally. She sighed as she watched him, the one of her friends spoke up about him and how he had been acting. Lessa listened in on the conversation, of course. So everyone had really picked up on the difference in him and Lessa wasn't really sure what it was.
It was a big possibility that it could have been her, and what she'd told him but she knew nobody knew about that. Laken wouldn't have told anyone and she sure as hell hadn't spoken a word about it. Suddenly a friend of hers asked what she'd thought about it, "Well.." Lessa started, "I haven't really spoken to him, really. I mean he's nice, I guess.. but I don't really know him.." Apparently one of her friends didn't believe that because he spoke up, "Well from what I hear you and him were seen having lunch together and looking owe fully cozy afterwards.."
Lessa sighed, as she started to blush just slightly. She wondered who had seen them but she didn't care, "Well yeah, I had to sit with him.. the place was packed and he had the only empty spot. It happened by chance.. no big deal.." A few of her friends looked at her suspiciously but shrugged it off. Most of them, the girls, didn't wanna believe that Lessa had been able to eat lunch with him, alone and not be bombarded by all their friends but Lessa didn't feel so lucky about it.
After lunch, all her friends had headed to the courtyard but Lessa stayed behind. She wanted to confront Laken. After getting rid of her tray, she walked over to his table, sitting down in the chair next to his, "People shouldn't pretend to be someone they aren't.. like you Laken.." her tone was full of evil, bitchy Lessa that most didn't get a chance to experience. She wasn't going to pretend like she wasn't mad, but mostly hurt. And she hadn't wanted him to know that but he could, she hadn't had her shield up for quite a while now.
"You're just like every other guy here.. pretending to be so nice, sweet.. and then you turn around and act just.. like.. them." She knew she probably shouldn't be so mean to him but Lessa was a totally different person when she'd gotten hurt by someone she really cared about. Laken for example. "I was truthful with you... I opened my heart to you.. and you stepped on it in return.." She sighed a little, getting really mad at herself because she had now started to cry. She wasn't going to let herself cry. Sadly though she had spent the last week doing nothing but that while she was alone in her room.
"As far as I'm concerned.. you can disappear.. which shouldn't be too hard.. you've done pretty well at it lately.." Sighing she stood to her feet and walked out of the lunchroom. She knew there was a very little chance of him coming after her, or stopping her but she didn't care. She had told him what she had wanted to and that was all that mattered to her. He could now go to hell for all she cared. But, if Lessa were being honest with herself, she wouldn't have said any of that. She still cared about him as much as she had that day. Her pride, however, wouldn't let her admit to that.

The meal passed by in the same blur the entire week went by in. There was no point in him actually getting his plate full of food because the only thing he had touched was his liter of Full Throttle which was currently empty. Maybe he should lay off the caffeine because it was supposed to keep his mind awake when right now all he wanted was to stop thinking. Why couldn’t he just stop thinking about this? The other girls that went after Laken were forgettable, all the same, but Lessa was different and it confused Laken to no end.
Some time during the meal he heard his name and Lessa’s within someone’s thoughts. It shocked him and made him look up curiously trying to find the source. After a few minutes of searching his brilliant green eyes landed on a girl that was talking to Lessa who apparently wasn’t giving much of an answer. Well she did give an answer but it was a bit bitter, well more than a bit. She seemed upset at the mentioning of him and Laken could understand why, he just ran away from her and avoided her. It’s not that Laken didn’t think she was a great person, he just didn’t know what he would do if he had to face her again and she would ask for an answer, one that he still hadn’t worked out.
While the Dining Hall began to empty out Laken sat in his seat, still in the same position with his head in his hands. People’s thoughts were all buzzing about what they were going to do after they ate or the conversations that they had with their friends. Then all of a sudden he heard someone talking to him. It shouldn’t have surprised Laken all that much; he should have remembered that she could shield him out of her thoughts. Laken had imagined Lessa approaching him; of course she would be mad, but not as mad as she seemed right now.
The words that came out of Lessa’s mouth felt like knives to the heart. So call it childish or not Laken rested his elbows on the table, clamped his hands to his ears, and looked down at the table. He couldn’t handle having Lessa tell him what he knew he was. That was one of the things that he was thinking about. Was he really such a nice person? Or was he like his mom? Or worse… was he like his dad and those people on the street? He couldn’t stand hearing his thoughts confirmed especially by Lessa.
Even though he had his ears covered he heard every word that she spoke and her last words, wanting him to disappear confirmed everything that he had ever believed to be true. Of course he should disappear its not like he has done any good for anybody else, all he does is make people mad. It’s not like anybody has given him a reason that he should be here, no one ever showed the cared until Lessa but obviously she didn’t anymore.
When Lessa walked away Laken didn’t know what to do, once again. How was he supposed to react to her when she just tore up what was left of his heart? That was another thing, how could she do that? How could Lessa tear up his heart? It was so confusing and Laken didn’t understand what he felt toward her, it didn’t make sense to him. Another thing that didn’t make sense to him was why as Lessa got closer to the doorway Laken suddenly rose from his chair and ran after her. He didn’t know why he was doing this, it was like his body was taking over and pushing threw the confusion in his mind. When he was right behind her he reached out and grabbed her arm so she wouldn’t leave.
There was a problem in what he had just done. Now that he had reached her and had her attention what was he supposed to do? He still had his hand on her arm and he realized that he was shaking. There was the tall 6 foot 7 inch giant standing in front of Lessa completely lost for words and shaking ever so slightly. He didn’t know what he was doing, he had never had emotions like this, he didn’t know what to do with them or what they even were. Laken knew that he should give an explanation to what had happened and why he ran, but he couldn’t figure out what to say so he could explain right. So he settled on what he knew he could say at the very least.
”I’m sorry…” Laken said quietly with his head ducked down to the ground, once again looking more like a little boy than a teenage guy facing a simple problem of emotions.

Lessa couldn't even begin to explain the way she felt when she watched him covers his ears as she spoke. She knew, however, that he could in fact hear her. It was hard not to. In fact, Lessa just so happened to be talking so loud that a few people had stopped to look at the scene between the two. Starring at the crying Lessa who was yelling and Laken, covering his ears to shield whatever it was she was saying.
After she'd finished her little rant, she stood up and basically ran away from him. The only thought going through Lessa's head was why had she been so mean to him? But then she hated herself for thinking that because he had hurt her. After thinking he was so different from every other guy, he had still hurt her. She couldn't explain any of it but she felt as if she'd been run over, twice.
Just as she was about to exit the dining hall, she felt a rather large hand grab onto her, stopping her from leaving. She hadn't expected him to stop her but when she turned around, it was in fact him. As she stood there, his hand still on her arm, she realized he was shaking just slightly. She sighed as she looked down at the ground instead of at him, waiting on him to speak.
When Laken finally did speak, he said he was sorry. Really? Are you sure about that? That was the question running around in her thoughts, the question she wanted to ask. And the attitude behind it wouldn't have been all too pretty either. However, she couldn't bring herself to do that. Maybe it was because he looked like a little kid facing something else rather then a teenage boy facing a girl he had hurt.
What Lessa couldn't understand was what was wrong with him. SO yeah, he should feel bad for hurting her but he shouldn't feel this bad. Unless. Well, unless he had feelings for her too. Which he still hadn't admitted to. After standing there for a while, Lessa had realized she had yet to speak but now she wasn't sure what to say. She didn't wanna fuss at him but a part of her couldn't help it.
"Laken, I really don't know what to say. I'm not sure if I can just forgive and forget." Though that's really all she wanted to do. She didn't wanna be mad at him, she didn't wanna hate him. And as it were right now, he was making it really hard to do either of those. Right now all she really wanted to do was hug him, tell him it was okay but there again, her pride wouldn't let her.
But for once in Lessa's life, she fought her pride. "I really want to be mad at you. I want to hate you for hurting me. I want you to disappear and never talk to me again..." she trailed off after that, adverting her eyes to him for the first time since he'd stopped her, "But.. I can't.. and I don't" She sighed just a little as she stepped towards him, taking the hand that had still been holding her arm in her hand. "I can't be mad at you... and I'm sorry for what I said. I didn't mean any of it. I was just upset.. with you. And I didn't know what else to do. I wanted you to feel bad for what you did. I wanted you to feel as bad as I did.. as bad as I still do.."
Stepping even closer to him, she stood on her tiptoes, pulling on his arm at the exact same time. Kissing his cheek, sh let his arm loose but only for a short time before she pulled him to her again, this time kissing his lips ever so lightly. She wasn't sure what had possessed her to do that but she had. Finally she let go of his arm, stepping away from him a few feet. She kept her eyes on the ground as she waited on his to respond to what she had said, and done.

Honestly Laken didn’t know how Lessa would respond to his apology. He had been a big jerk, just leaving her there when she told him her feelings. A normal guy wouldn’t have freaked out and run away, a normal guy would have just said they had feelings or just wanted to be friends, but not Laken. No, Laken had to freak out and run away, then avoid her for the next week until she came up to him and yelled at him. So Laken wasn’t a normal guy, how could a mind reader that has had Laken’s past possibly be a normal guy?
When she said that she wasn’t sure if she could forgive him something felt wrong in the pit of his stomach. Laken didn’t understand what was happening; he didn’t understand any of this. If he hadn’t met Lessa at that restaurant he wouldn’t be dealing with this right now, but no matter how Laken thought of that he couldn’t regret meeting her. Why couldn’t he regret it? What was this feeling he had? What was happening to his emotions? It was like Lessa had this hold on him, but Laken couldn’t explain it, he didn’t know what it was.
The words that followed the previous statement made the feeling in his stomach go away, but it was replaced by a different feeling. Seriously, what was going on with him? It was a feeling like happiness, no it was happiness. He was happy that she wasn’t mad at him, he was happy that she didn’t mean what she said, Lessa made him happy and that was something that rarely happened for Laken. It was rare for other people to make him happy, to make him feel good, but Lessa had done it, she was making him happy, but there was still this weird feeling he had that he still didn’t understand.
Then Lessa took a step closer to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. The feeling in his stomach intensified and it confused him even more. Then all of a sudden her lips where on his, but in a quick gentle way, not like those other girls who were aggressive and pushy. Lessa was so different then any of the other girls Laken had met, no she was different then all of the other people in general that he has met. Nobody has ever been this kind to him, sure people are polite and friendly but this was different, so different.
Now its not that Laken was saying that he didn’t enjoy it, he did, but the feelings of confusion still were floating around his head. ”I don’t get it…”[b/] Laken said looking straight at Lessa, just wanting to get the answers he needed. ”I don’t understand any of this!” Laken said in a frustrated tone. There was no way of knowing that Lessa could explain it to him, well maybe she could. These were probably normal feelings that anyone else could deal with, but Laken wasn’t normal he couldn’t understand his own feelings. ”I just don’t get it. Why are you being so nice to me? Why are you even interested in me? And why the hell do I feel so… I don’t know!”Laken mumbled this time, looking at the ground feeling kind of stupid for not understanding any of this but desperate to find the meaning.

Lessa hadn't expected the feeling that she'd gotten when she'd kissed him. It was like nothing she had ever felt before. It was an amazing feeling, even considering the fact that he hadn't reacted to the kiss and he hadn't kissed her back. That didn't matter to her. All she could think about was the intense feeling in her stomach as she;d kissed him. it was a feeling that no matter what you did or said, you couldn't ignore. A feeling that wouldn't go away no matter how many times you tried to get rid of it, or to not think about. A feeling that Lessa wanted to feel again but she knew that now wasn't the best time.
Lessa wasn't really sure what was going in his head and right now she really wished she could read his mind. She din't know what he was feeling, if he felt even half as much as she had. And she still didn't know if he liked her or not. Though that was probably a pretty good guess. Laken wouldn't have stopped her from leaving if he hadn't cared anything about her. He had to care somewhat. Looking up at him when he spoke, she thought over what he had said to her. He'd asked why she was being so nice and why she was interested in him. She smiled just slightly as she prepared to answer the question.
Taking his hand in hers again, she pulled on it and then started to walk. Leaving the dining hall, she headed outdoors and into the courtyard. After she turned to face him, most everyone were in class or doing whatever but not many people were in the courtyard, "I'm being nice to you because I like you and I want to be nice to you. You deserve to have some kindess in your life, whether you believe that or not.." She smiled some as she thought over his other question, "And I'm interested in you becase you make me feel like no other guy has. You make my life a whole lot better than it was. You're nice, sweet, sensitive, caring and above all, a really great guy. Whether you believe that or not." She smiled as she stretched her hand up to run it through his hair then ran her fingers lightly across his cheek before she stopped as her fingers danced along his chin.
"You make me feel good about my life. You make the memories of my dad come alive again.. you act like he use to.. you don't treat people any different no matter what they are, who they are or what powers they do or don't have.." Keeping her fingers on his chin, she pulled him down to her again, whispering in his ear, "And I have every intention of falling insanely in love with you.. whether you fall for me or not.." It was the truth. And Lessa was surprised by that. She did have every intetnion of falling in love with him. She wanted him more than she had ever wanted any guy in her life.
Pulling away from him, she spoke again "And I really don't what you feel but.. I'm guessing that you have feelings for me as well.. and you can't hide from that.. nor can you make those feelings go away.. those feelings are there whether you like it or not.." She smiled just slightly up at him, "Don't be afraid of it.." She whispered, letting her hand fall to his, interlacing her fingers with his. "And please, whatever you do, don't push me away. I'm gonna be here whether you try to or not.. but it might hurt just a little if you do.." After that she got quiet, waiting on him to respond to everything that she had just told him.
