Today’s plans for finding a place to eat in silence and peace didn’t quiet work out the way that Laken had thought. Instead of finding the quiet little place that was practically deserted Laken was instead stuck in a crowded room filled with rambunctious teenagers and their parents. The thoughts that were overloading Laken’s head were becoming overwhelming, that was until Lessa showed up. The little buffer was just what Laken needed in such a crowded room. Since Lessa was a shield he could focus on her and the room would dim down. There was also the added bonus that she could also shield Laken, making the world go silent for once in his life.
Now Laken and Lessa had decided to go back to the school and Laken knew exactly where he was going to take her. The place he was going was the one of the only spots in the school that Laken could find solitude, well besides his room that he didn’t share because having a roommate just wouldn’t work out for Laken. Having to be stuck in a closed space with one person for more than necessary would drive Laken mad, well having one persons thought roaming in your head all night would drive anyone crazy. So it was only logical for Laken to room alone, besides not many people wanted to room with the mind reader anyway.
Before Laken brought Lessa down to his favorite place he had to go to his dorm and get supplies. He walked throughout the school and when he arrived at his dorm room door he shoved it open and walked in. Laken’s room was bare in a way that even a minimalist would even think that it was empty. On Laken’s bed was a single pillow and blanket, both provided by the school. His set of drawers had nothing but a lamp and clock on it and the same went for his desk except all that was there was a laptop. There weren’t any photos or posters on the walls or clothes on the floor or hanging out of the closet. The brightest thing in his room was a magnet on the mini fridge that was a light blue color. After grabbing a blanket, a few drinks, and a few bags of chips Laken turned back to Lessa, who Laken was sure was marveling at the emptiness in his room, and said, ”Come on lets go.”
”This place is the best,” Laken said as he walked out of the school, crossed through the courtyard, passed the pond, and followed the wall that divided the school from the outside world. Laken knew this route by heart, he had fount this place his freshman year and has never told a soul about it. It was in the very back of the garden, where nobody ever goes. The shrubs and trees were overgrown but there were still a few run down benches and beautiful statues. Sure the place was a little but shabby, but that was the appeal of it for Laken, it wasn’t perfect but it was still beautiful in its own way.
”Now you can’t tell anybody about it,” Laken said as he threw the blanket on the ground because the benches barely supported Laken’s weight so adding another person would probably cause them to collapse. Speaking of collapsing, Laken collapsed onto the blanket and lay down on his back, feeling a little worn from the whole crowd issue earlier in the day. Most people didn’t understand how exhausting it was to have to try and sort out all the thoughts in your head from your own and someone else’s, well no one understood unless they too were a mind reader or schizophrenic.

Lessa had agreed to go with Laken, it seemed he knew the perfect place to take her so she was all for it. When they arrived back at the school they headed up to his room, which Lessa was surprised to see was slightly bare. No pictures of his family, assuming his family were still around, or cared about Laken in the slightest. It was weird for Lessa to think that Laken's family didn't care anything about him. Although her mom and sister didn't care anything about her either, she still had her dad. She figured Laken had to have someone in his family that cared enough, or even a little.
When he finished getting what he wanted, he walked back out and told Lessa to come on, making Lessa realize she had been daydreaming while waiting on him. She followed him outside, through the courtyard and past the pond. That's when he told her not to tell anyone about this place, "I won't" was all she said, but he knew that she wouldn't. She looked around the place, it was secluded and you could tell that not many, if any besides Laken knew it was there. She smiled as he laid down the blanket and then laid down on it.
Walking over, she did the same, cradling her neck with her arms. She sighed contently and looked over at him, watching him pretty intently. She had realized that he totally ignored her comment back in town but she hadn't really said anything since. Laken was pretty certain that he wasn't lovable. That disturbed Lessa more then she ever thought possible but she wasn't really sure what to do. She knew that Laken thought she was different then most girls, she had at least gotten that vibe from him, so putting moves on him wouldn't be the best thing for her to do. She just wanted him to understand.
Eventually though she was certain that he would, now just wasn't exactly the time for it. She sighed as she looked back up at the sky again, "What's your family like? You haven't really mentioned them.." She had mentioned her mom and sister a few times, and her dad a ton of times but he had yet to really mention his family. It made Lessa think that his family wasn't exactly there for Laken, much like the emptiness of his room had. Her room was filled with stuff from her dad, and a few things from her mom. She turned over on her side to face him, resting her head on her elbow. She wasn't really sure what kind of an answer he would give her but she hoped that he told her the truth. She wanted to know.

It was relaxing to just lay there in his little secluded spot. The last time Laken had actually been here was a while ago. Lately Laken has been preoccupied with school and improving his powers that he hadn’t had much time to come to his little sanctuary. Its not like Laken had expected someone else to discover it but he was kind of worried that something would have changed, but of course it didn’t. The place was still the same, but right now Lessa was here, making everything totally different. So when she agreed not to tell anyone Laken was pretty relieved, even though he was sure she wouldn’t if he asked.
As Laken watched the clouds drift by he was lost in his own thoughts. It wasn’t all that often when Laken was alone with his thoughts and it was nice just to be able to think for once without someone else’s thoughts pushing their way into his head. However Laken’s peaceful state of mind was interrupted by Lessa. Not that Laken was mad at her for talking, she was actually pretty good company. However the subject that she brought up wasn’t one that Laken particularly liked. Actually Laken hated the subject of his family because it brought back those memories of his past and those weren’t things he wanted to remember.
”Uh…” Laken said sitting up from his laying position. He seriously didn’t know how to respond. Nobody knew about Laken’s past except the people that ran the school. Actually nobody really knew much about Laken at all besides the fact that he was friendly and kind. The school’s general population only knew that Laken was the big friendly giant that was friends with just about everyone, hell Laken could even befriend a demon, but most of the demon’s tended to avoid him. Well Laken kind of avoided most demons, like that Benji guy, their thoughts weren’t something that a good person would like to experience.
The people that Laken called family weren’t exactly accepting of Laken and his abilities. Ever since Laken could remember he could read people’s minds. When he was younger people just thought he was really smart and intuitive, but by the time he was old enough to go to school people knew there was something wrong. When a little 4 year old boy in pre-school would console the teacher when her boyfriend broke up with her, something no one knew, or when the same little boy was able to answer questions that were never asked, well the school got worried. After a parent teacher meeting Laken’s parents worst fears were confirmed. Laken was different, but not in the socially acceptable way and they knew it.
Little did Laken’s parents know just how much he knew about what was going on. Laken knew that his parents were scared to death of him and that he was the reason that they fought and he was the reason that Mommy was sad and Daddy was never home. All that information shouldn’t be stuff that a little boy should know. Eventually Laken’s little brother and sister, twins, came along and Laken’s mom kept them away from Laken, scared what he could do. As the little twins grew up Laken was ignored even more, his mom preferring to have normal kids and not a freak of a child.
His dad was home more after the twins were born but the only time he spent with Laken was to… discipline him. The only time Laken met anyone in his extended family was when he was a baby, but he was never allowed near them anymore and no one tried to see him. By the time Laken was 10 years old after an incident in his house his parents kicked him out to fend for himself. The next 4 years were things that Laken didn’t want to remember, so he avoided those thoughts at all costs. After those 4 years someone from the school found him roaming the streets of a city in the States and brought him to the school where Laken finally felt accepted. However a feeling of acceptance wasn’t enough to erase life long lessons.
Laken didn’t realize that he had totally spaced out, he didn’t know how long he was lost in thought but with a small shake of his head he turned to look at Lessa with a small smile on his face and his hair falling in his brilliant green eyes. ”Sorry bout that,” Laken said in his usual friendly tone, as if nothing had happened. ”Just kind of tired from the restaurant,” Laken reasoned then realized that he hadn’t answered her questions. ”Oh well… I… don’t have a family anymore.” Yes, Laken was making it sound like they were dead, well Laken was at least dead to them. So it’s not like it was a total lie, just another version of the truth.

Lessa watched him as he sat up. She was starting to think she shouldn't have brought up his family or his past. Apparently that was a touchy subject for him. "Sorry.." She sighed just slightly as she continued to watch him. She could tell that something was going through his head right now. Something that he didn't exactly wanna remember but the memories were still there no matter what. She hadn't meant to bring up a sore subject but she should have known better to begin with.
Sitting up, she leaned against him, her chin rested on his shoulder, "I'm sorry Laken. I shouldn't have brought it up.." She smiled just slightly and leaned away from him, still sitting up on the blanket. After he came back from his reverie and finally answered her, she sighed yet again. The way he talked about them it was like they were dead. And if they had done anything to hurt Laken then he probably wished they were. Lessa had learned within some of her own experience that not all family memebers like when they find out their son or daughter are just a little different then most.
After that she was pretty certain she had ruined whatever good mood he had been in and she didn't like that at all. She just wasn't really sure what to do now. She stayed quiet for the most part, waiting on him to speak again. It was hard for her to understand why parents could be so cruel to their kids. It was unbelievable but it happened quite often, a little more often then Lessa was too happy with.
A lot of the kids at Hordcrocks didn't have the support from their family that they needed. Coming to the school was a vacation for many of them and they'd rather be here then at home. Sometimes Lessa felt the same. She was glad she got a little vacation away from her family, especially her mom and her sister. She missed her dad the most though. He was always the one there for her, whom she could always count on when she needed him.
Slowly, Lessa laid down on the blanket again, sighing rather loudly and then closing her eyes. Now she was annoyed, frustrated and at a loss for words, which hardly ever happened with Lessa. She always had something to say to anything her friends said. With Laken things were different. She didn't wanna upset him anymore then she already had and she was pretty certain her big mouth already had. The frustration of it all made her a little unaware of the fact that she'd let her shield for her mind falter and finally drop altogether, making everything in her head, his as well. Though right now the only thoughts in her head were the fact that she'd upset him and how mad at herself she was for it.

The thoughts of Laken’s family weren’t the most pleasant things. There were very few memories of Laken’s family that were actually good. Usually those were the times when his mom actually acknowledged his existence, those were rare occurrences. Laken couldn’t understand how a parent could just ignore their child. A normal parent would love each child equally, not ignore one of them because they were different. However Laken knew that not every parent was normal, his sure weren’t, at least to him. Laken’s parents were the perfect parents for his little brother and sister because they were normal but when it came to Laken it was more like he was the house dog that always made a mess.
When Lessa spoke, saying she was sorry Laken just shook his head. Lessa shouldn’t feel sorry for bringing up his family. It was natural to want to know about a person and a common topic was family. It wasn’t Lessa’s fault that he didn’t have a family to speak of, well he did just not one that acknowledged him. Though Laken didn’t understand why she was so sorry for bringing it up. It wasn’t her fault that it was a touchy subject for Laken and there was no way that she would’ve known better. Even though estranged families were common at this school how was she to know that Laken was one of those students.
”Don’t worry bout it Less,” Laken said with a soft smile. There was no need for Lessa to get all worked up about Laken’s family or the fact that she brought it up. At least once a day Laken thought of them even though he didn’t want to think about them it seemed inevitable. There were always things that reminded Laken of them, random things that people did or a subject that would pop into someone else’s head.
When Lessa lay back down on the blanket Laken felt kind of bad that he had ruined the friendly mood… or were those really his thoughts. That’s when Laken realized that the shield that protected Lessa’s thoughts was down and that he could hear what she was thinking. She felt bad that she brought up his family because it was obviously a sore subject and was mad that she had upset him. It was really odd to be hearing thoughts like these because he never heard them, well addressed to him anyway. There were plenty of girls that had gone after Laken but none of them really cared about how he felt, or they started to but it went away when they discovered that he never shared his feelings. But here Lessa was beating herself up for upsetting Laken even though he had given her so many vague answers that most girls would get annoyed by now.
”Seriously Less its alright,” Laken said trying to reassure her. It was weird that he cared so much that she was mad at herself. Not that Laken is an uncaring person; he is far from it, but in the past when people were mad at themselves because of Laken it was for wasting their time, not upsetting him. So Laken felt obligated to make sure that she wasn’t beating herself up too much. ”It’s just my family… they aren’t the greatest of people,” Laken said trying to explain himself a little more. ”Now come on cheer up,” he said and grabbed the food and drinks he brought. After digging through the bag he pulled out a four pack of Red Bull and a large bag of Barbeque chips for himself and handed the bag over to Lessa. ”Food always cheers me up,” Laken said with a smile.

Lessa was still a little upset with herself but he continued to tell her that it was okay. She still couldn't help but wonder what his family had done to him but she kept the thoughts to herself. Eventually he'd trust her enough to tell her on his own. She wasn't going to push the subject until then. When he grabbed the bag, going through it to pull out a four pack of red bull, she grabbed one of them but she didn't grab anything else from the bag. She just simply took it from him and sat it down beside her. After the burger and fries she wasn't really hungry anymore.
"Well if it make you feel any better, my mom and my sister pretty much despise me. Always have really.." She trailed off after that, taking a sip of her red bull. Sighing a little, she laid back on the blanket. For as long as Lessa could remember her mom had always chosen her sister over her. Whenever Lucy picked on Lessa and Lessa tried to take up for herself, her mom scolded Lessa instead of Lucy. Lessa learned at a young age to just take whatever her sister gave her. Up until Lessa found that she had a shield. After that, with the help of her dad, things started to change.
Lucy soon realized she had the powers as well, and even though that was the one thing Lessa's mom hated about Lessa, she still treated Lucy like she always had. It was really no big deal to Lessa. She had the kind of relationship with her dad that Lucy had with her mom. Her dad would take up for Lessa when her mom was cradling Lucy. And that's how Lessa always described it. Lessa's dad taught her to be stronger then what her mom had taught Lucy. Lessa was thankful for her dad. Most days she thought she'd up and die if it wasn't for him.
Now with her at the school, she didn't see him very often but she had learned to take care of herself. She didn't let people run all over her, except guys, and that was for reasons Lessa didn't like talking about. She hated being vulnerable but guys changed her and she hadn't always liked that. Most guys would have her eating out the palm of their hand before long. Laken, however, was different. He was a lot nicer then any of the other guys Lessa had liked. All of her guy friends always wondered why she always went after the jerks of the school but Lessa couldn't stop herself falling for them.
It surprised her just slightly that she liked Laken. He was the exact opposite of every other guy she had chased down. But she wasn't chasing Laken either. For right now, they were friends and Lessa had no problem with that. She wouldn't say that eventually she didn't hope that it wouldn't turn into more but for right now she would just settle as being his friends. It took Lessa a little while of thinking to realize that he could actually hear her. She hadn't realized she'd let down her shield until a few minutes later and then she just looked at Laken, "Um, you could hear all of that, couldn't you?"
At this point she wished she could disappear. She could feel her cheeks heat up from embarrassment and she was pretty certain that she just wanted to run away from him and never talk to him again. This was unbelievable.

What Lessa thought would make Laken feel better didn’t really have the affect that she was hoping for. The thought of Lessa having a situation at home even a fraction of what Laken had wasn’t something that he would wish for her or make him happy. Laken would never wish for a family that hated one of its own members for anybody. He knew what it was like to be shunned by family and practically everybody else. When Laken was younger none of the kids wanted to hang out with him because he was “weird” nobody could define it, they didn’t know that he could read minds, but Laken was avoided like a plague at home and at school.
After Lessa spoke she began to think and Laken could hear everything that was passing through her mind, apparently she forgot about her mental shield. From what Laken heard Lessa’s mother always favored her sister, even when they were children. Laken could relate to that, Laken’s parents always favored the twins. Then she began thinking about her powers and how her father helped her but when her sister got powers her mother was totally fine with her sister. That was something that irritated Laken, how could her mother show so much favoritism in one child when both of them had powers? However at least Lessa had her dad, a parent that looked out for her, something Laken didn’t have.
Then her thoughts shifted to the subject of the school and the guys here. Apparently Lessa had attracted all the wrong kind of guys, the kind that lied and were jerks. That was something that Laken didn’t understand, Lessa seemed like a nice girl, how could some guy take advantage of that? When Laken’s name entered her mind he was kind of surprised, but they were hanging out at the moment so it was understandable. However her thoughts ventured to how he was different from the other guys at the school. The next thought that Laken heard took him by complete and total surprise, she was starting to like him. Lessa was starting to like him. However she was fine with being friends and that was something Laken was grateful for because he wasn’t sure if he could ever have a relationship because all of his close relationships always failed or never existed in the first place. Sure she was hoping for more but if she was good with being friends Laken could deal with that, he knew what to do with friends, but anything more than that was unknown to Laken.
Crashing back to reality by Lessa’s voice Laken realized that he was in her head, lost in her thoughts. She wandered if Laken heard it all, which he had, and she was really embarrassed about it. She was wishing that she could disappear as her face turned bright red. Even though it was kind of insensitive Laken couldn’t help but laugh. He wasn’t laughing at her thoughts, but how bright her face got and how embarrassed she was. ”Sorry bout that,” Laken said after he got over his laughter but he still had a big smile on his face. ”Its okay Less, I’ve heard much more embarrassing thoughts than that. If you could hear some of the girls around the school think…” Laken trailed off getting the chills just thinking about it, some of the girls in the school had… creative minds.
Still looking at the sky Laken began trying to find shapes in the clouds and found one that looked like an apple eating a house. ”Don’t you sometimes wish you could fly?” Laken asked randomly, and then continued with an explanation. ”I mean like for a power. It would be freeing you know? Without worry just flying among the clouds…”

Lessa sat there next to Laken, waiting on his reaction to what she had asked, and the thoughts rolling around in her head. When he started to laugh, she pouted just slightly, "You know, that's the second time you've laughed at me today..." She shook her head as she protected her thoughts again. She didn't want him wondering around in her mind anymore. First off, he seemed to think everything that went through it was funny and second, she just wanted him out of her head.
Laying back onto the blanket as he did, she looked at the sky. it was really beautiful today and Lessa couldn't remember the last time she had actually enjoyed looking at it. In fact, Lessa couldn't remember the last time she had really enjoyed doing anything. Besides her powers. That was a given though. Everything with Lessa seemed so useless and pointless. With the exception of meeting Laken today. That had been the only good thing that had happened to Lessa lately. And she was thankful for it.
Her moods were never the best in the world and she tended to shut everyone out when that happened, and with her powers it was never a hard task. Lessa was brought back down to earth when laken made his statement about flying. She giggled slightly but nodded, "Yeah, flying would be pretty cool, i guess..." She loved feeling free and she didn't get that feeling very often. Being able to fly would bring that feeling around quite often.
Looking over at him, "I'd also like to be a shifter.. or a wolf. Being able to shift into your second form and running with the wind in your fur.. that would be amazing.." She laughed a little and shook her head. "And I'm kind of afraid of heights so the flying might not be a good thing after all.." For as long as Lessa could remember she had been afraid of heights and she had never known why. She often wondered if she'd experienced something that made her afraid but her dad had always said she hadn't so she wasn't really sure.
Turning over on her side again, she watced Laken. Smiling as the wind ruffled his hair. He was amazingly sweet, totally adorable, not very trusting nor did he think he was lovable but Lessa could already tell that she was in fact going to fall for him. She could tell already. In a way, it kinda scared her. She knew how he felt which meant she'd have to try and convinve him otherwise. She wasn't really sure how that would work out but she wouldn't give up trying to make him see it. She already could.
Moving her free hand, she ran it through his hair once again, letting the strands tickle her fingers. This was something she could get use to. It was something that he wasn't use to nor did he expect but little by little she would change his mind. She would make him see that he was lovable. Even if she had to fall for him to make him see it. And she had no problem with doing that at all.
Biting on her lip out of nervousness and worry that he would move away from her, she moved closer to him on the blanket, resting her head on his chest. "Please don't move away... just relax.." She sighed contently as she started to trace circles on his chest. She hoped that he let her stay but if he ended up getting that uncomfortable then she would move if he wanted.

”I’m not laughing at you,” Laken reasoned as he gulped down some red bull. ”Well I am laughing at you but not in the way that you’re thinking,” he added. He didn’t want her to think that he was being mean and making fun of her, but it was just that her reactions to things were kind of entertaining to Laken. It’s not like he hadn’t heard similar reactions in other people, but it was different hearing the thoughts come after something about Laken, it wasn’t something he was used to.
As Lessa spoke more about having different powers, how flying would be nice, Laken continued looking up at the clouds finding shapes. There was one that looked like a snake coiled up and another one that looked like a pineapple. When Lessa mentioned maybe being a shifter or a wolf Laken squinted and thought he could see a wolf instead of a pineapple… well if he squinted really hard and tilted his head a bit he could see it. Then when Lessa mentioned her fear of heights Laken chuckled, not a full on laugh but he still found that amusing. Laken had a few fears but they weren’t of heights.
Honestly Laken didn’t notice Lessa looking at him watch the clouds. There weren’t very many opportunities for Laken to be at peace like this, so when he was able to come to this spot or be alone at anytime he savored the moments and took everything in. The clouds for instance, Laken was soaking up every moment that he saw them. Of course he saw clouds almost everyday but usually he was so distracted by the crowd of thoughts in his head that he could only focus on trying to dull them down to just a blur that he couldn’t concentrate on anything around it and really savor it.
However Laken was brought back from his cloud watching daze when he felt a hand run through his hair, Lessa’s hand. This wasn’t something that Laken was used to, like said before, Laken isn’t an innocent little virgin, but the gentleness behind Lessa’s touch was something new. Nobody had ever Laken been subject to gentleness or care like this and he didn’t really know what to do to be quite truthful. The best he could do was kind of tense up and keep looking up at the sky, even though he wasn’t concentrating on the clouds anymore.
Then to take things to a whole other level Lessa asked him to not move then she placed her head on his chest and began tracing circles on his lean, yet not freaky muscular chest. She asked him to relax and that was easier than not movie. Currently Laken was far from relaxed, he was completely tense and he didn’t quite know what to do. Sure Laken has had girls this close to him but not in ways like this, not in this genuine, kind way. In the past when Laken tried to prove to himself that he could be loved he had had a few short relationships that ended when the girl got bored of his lack of deeper emotions. So Laken gave up on relationships and concluded that he really was unlovable, not just by his family.
The thing was that Laken didn’t want to be like this, he didn’t want to be the guy that couldn’t be loved or the one that didn’t know what to do when someone showed any deep feelings toward him. Laken knew how to deal with the basic feelings, happiness and anger and sadness, but he couldn’t deal with anything deeper because he just didn’t know how. So trying his hardest to relax was kind of hard to do for Laken. He was taking deep breathes, trying to figure out what was going on and what this meant. To make it worse he couldn’t hear her thoughts so he couldn’t know for sure. Honestly Laken just didn’t know what he was supposed to do right now.
”I... uhhhh…” Laken started to say but didn’t know what to say or what to do still. Running his hands through his already wild hair Laken sighed and mumbled, ”I don’t know…”

Lessa smiled when he told her that he wasn't laughing at her. At least not in the way she was thinking. She thought that over in her head for a while, thinking about what she had been thinking about when he laughed. Mostly the only thoughts running around in her head at the time were liking Laken. Hm, maybe what was what he laughed at. Maybe he found it funny that those thoughts were addressed to him because he thought he was unlovable. It was a wild guess but Lessa figured it was right. It had to be.
Resting against Laken brought on a whole new set of emotions for Lessa. She liked being this close to him. She liked showing him that she did care, and that it was easy. That was the biggest thing for Lessa. Being with Laken like this was easy for her. She didn't really have to think about it, well except for the fact that he could always move away from her. And she had felt him tense under her but he hadn't told her to move. A part of her wanted to move to give him space but another part of her wanted to stay, to not give him space. To make him see that he was capable of being loved.
It was strange for Lessa. She had never known anyone that felt the same way she had. She had never known anyone else who felt unlovable like she felt. She really wasn't happy about the fact that it was Laken but she'd have to deal with that until she coud show him otherwise. When she thought about it for a moment, she knew that he was probably wondering what this meant and what he should do so Lessa slowly lowered the shield over her mind. 'I'm not trying to push you into anything.. I just want you to see that you are capable of being loved on.. that you can be loved.. this doesn't mean anything for us.. well not really.. if you understand what I'm saying.' She sighed a little as she thought about how best to say it, or think it rather.
Slowly, she sat up to look him in the eyes, and then she spoke, "I'm not gonna pretend like I don't like you and that you don't mean a lot to me already because you do. And to be totally honest, I do see myself falling for you already... In fact I'm pretty sure I already have.." Glancing down at his chest for a few moments, she finally adverted her eyes back to him, "I don't want to pressure you into anything.. and I don't want this to change anything for us.. whatever the future might bring.. but I will be more lovable towards you then I am to other guys.. and again I say you can take that however you want.. I don't care.." After saying this, she sighed a little, "And please don't push me away.. I know you're use to it and its gonna be hard not to.. but I'm not sure my heart can handle too much of it.."
She knew that no matter what he did, even if he did push her away, she'd think that it was because of how he felt not because he didn't like her. At least thats what she hoped anyways, 'And I have one question.. that I'm gonna ask in my thoughts rather than outloud... Do you like me.. as more than a friend? I know its a little soon to be asking this.. but try to answer it as best as you can... no matter how hard it might be.' She knew that this would be difficult for him and she didn't wanna make things difficult but she needed to know. "I need to know.. just so when I try to show affection, in whatever way, and you push me away.. I know that its not because you don't like me but because of the fact that you think you're unlovable.."
It was true, that was the only reason she wanted to know. She wasn't going to take the showing off affection too far, nothing that would make him uncomfortable. Just little things like kisses on the cheek, hugs, playing in his hair. Simple things like that. She hoped that eventually that worked its way past his feeling of being unlovable and made him realize that he actually was. That's all she wanted to prove to him. She was determined to no matter what she had to do or go through to make him see it. She smiled up at him slightly, her shiled for her thoughts still down. She wanted him to know what she was thinking. What she was planning on doing. She didn't want it to be too much of a shock to him when it happened.
The only other thing on her mind was how easy it would be for her to show affection towards Laken, She knew if he tried to distance himself from her, or just simply ignored her affections then she would be hurt but that was a reason as to why she wanted to know if he liked her or not, even in the smallest way. She needed to know to help prepare herself. Even if he said he didn't, she still had every intention of showing him that he could be loved. Even if she got nothing in return. She didn't care. Everything she'd need would be him realizing that he could be loved. That was all she wanted.

The thing about this whole situation that made Laken so unsure as to what he was supposed to do was that he had never experienced this before. Most people have known what it was like to at least be taken care of, to have a mother that would kiss their scraped knee or a dad to teach them how to ride a bike. But Laken didn’t have a normal past and was never taught a thing about love; receiving it or delivering it. It made Laken kind of mad that he was so inept as to what to do when it came to any thing that came close to intimate emotion and what made him even more mad was that Laken’s parents could have cared and done something to make him normal but they didn’t. So here Laken was tense and totally confused.
To add to the already extremely conflicting and confusing moment Lessa let down the wall she had around her thoughts revealing what she was thinking and addressing him at the same time. Lessa was trying to convince him that it was possible that he could be loved, but Laken wasn’t sure what to think. Nobody had ever done anything that would prove to him that it was possible, not a single person in the world. But here Lessa was telling him that she would prove to him that it was capable of being loved. She was telling him that she would prove something that Laken has believed to be true all his life wrong and that shook him up a bit.
When Lessa sat up Laken was sure a look of utter confusion was plastered across his face. He was not only confused as to how she thought he was lovable but how she was going to prove it. Then Lessa continued to address him, but this time she used her words instead of her thoughts. What she told him seriously freaked him out. How could such a nice, caring person like Lessa be falling for him? How was it even possible that she could feel anything towards him? To make matters worse he knew that she couldn’t handle it if he said no, if he pushed her away. It put him between a rock and a hard place; he didn’t know what to do.
Sitting straight up Laken pulled his knees to his chest and wrapped his arms around them. Laken didn’t know what to do and then to add even more to this stressful situation she asked him a question, a hard question. She wanted to know how he felt. It seemed like it should be such a simple request, but for Laken it was one of the most difficult questions in the world. Laken was the guy that couldn’t understand the deeper emotions he felt and right now Laken was feeling a lot of confusion about the emotions he had at the moment.
” I… I, uh…”Laken stuttered, burying his head in his knees. He probably looked more like a confused little boy than a 17 year old faced with a simple request. Running his hands through his hair with his head still ducked into his knees Laken tried to think of what to say, try to understand what was happening. He was sitting like this for maybe a minute and he knew he had to give Lessa an answer, but he just couldn’t think of what to say because he simply didn’t know.
Then, call it cowardice or whatever you’d like to think of it as, Laken stood up quickly, looking pretty frantic. He stood still for a moment with his head ducked and his mess of hair falling over his brilliant green eyes. ”I’m sorry… I’m sorry,” Laken repeated over and over as he started backing away. He knew that he was probably hurting her, but he didn’t know what else to do. So he ran, after quickly turning away still muttering he was sorry all the way to his dorm room as he sunk against the wall, still trying to comprehend what had just happened.
