we've got it good whether you like this town or not What the hell was Laken thinking going to this restaurant? It was Laken’s plan to go somewhere small and quiet for dinner that way he would be able to eat in silence, something that Laken never experienced. Of course if Laken went to a small quiet restaurant he was sure that it would be the quietest meal of his life. There would only be the staff of the restaurant that he would hear instead of the entire Dining Hall filled with every single student in the school and that got really obnoxious. There were also the things that Laken didn’t want to hear, like the demons or some girls fretting about their latest boy dramas. Sometimes Laken wished he could just stop hearing whatever went threw peoples minds, but the larger the crowd the harder it was to block off what he was hearing.
Since it was Laken’s plan to find a quiet place he figured he’d go into town and find the most average looking spot he could find. That was when his eyes landed on the Hana Chotis. The packed streets were becoming overwhelming so Laken rushed into the tiny little restaurant. At the time when Laken entered the restaurant it was practically deserted except for an old women in the corner thinking about how she needed to buy some cat food soon and there was a lone waitress that was thinking about how she couldn’t wait to get off her shift so she could go see her boyfriend and… well you get the picture. Quickly turning his attention to a table Laken found one in the corner so he could be far away from the few people that were in the restaurant. Taking his seat in the two seater table Laken waited for the bored waitress to come get his order.
Just as the waitress finished jotting down Laken’s order of triple cheese burger with fries and an extra large Dr. Pepper, then enters an huge group of teenagers who fill almost every single table in the place. Immediately Laken’s head was filled with thoughts that didn’t belong to him. From what Laken had gathered was that this group was from a local human school that had just won some competition and decided to celebrate at the Hana Chotis. It was horrible luck on Laken’s part. Why couldn’t he have had a nearly quiet moment once? The last time Laken had a quiet meal was when he was probably a toddler and it’s not like Laken could remember something like that.
All of Laken’s life he has been hearing what everyone has been thinking and when he was younger and living with his family it proved to be the unluckiest thing in the world. At first his parents thought he was intuitive but as Laken got older, around age 5, he heard his parents thoughts that they thought there was something wrong with him. As a few more years passed Laken tried to avoid hearing what his parents were thinking but he couldn’t help but hear everything, much to the dismay of his tiny little ears. There was something wrong going on in his parent’s marriage and when he voiced his concern his father looked angry and his mother looked scared. Taking out their fear and frustration on him Laken was more than happy to find this new school when he was 14 years old and by then Laken knew how the world worked way too early in his life.
While waiting for his food in his tiny little table that didn’t fit his 6 foot 7 inch freakishly huge body Laken held his hands to his ears trying to block out the thoughts unsuccessfully. To normal people they would only hear mild chatter from the group but Laken heard a loud uproar, as loud as an explosion over and over. Laken barely even noticed the waitress come back with his food. It had probably been only 10 to 15 minutes since the group came in but to Laken it felt like forever because he could hear everything.
Slowly Laken lowered his hands from his ears to grab his burger but shockingly his hands were miraculously blocking out the volume of what he was hearing. Quickly putting down his burger Laken began rubbing his temples, a massive headache coming on. Just then the bell that signaled an entrance on a new customer sounded and Laken groaned lowering down in his chair. The person’s thoughts though were different and that’s when Laken realized that they were someone else from his school. Looking around Laken realized that he had the only unoccupied chair right across from him. Knowing Laken if she decided to sit down across from his he would be kind and polite because he learned that being nice was the safest thing and by now he was trained to be nice, but he meant it now. Sighing Laken leaned back in his chair waiting for the arrival of the newly entered person who he was pretty sure was about to come sit near him, but her thoughts were drowned out by the large group, which kind of threw him off.

Lessa wasn't really sure what to do with herself today. For the most part she hadn't been surrounded by all her friends, who meant well, but who just didn't seem to understand Lessa in the slightest way possible. She'd kinda been avoiding them and when a few had actually tried to include her she just basically ignored them and they finally got the picture and left her alone. She knew she would have to apologize later. And she would but for right now she was enjoying being by herself and not having to make one of them feel better about what she got into a fight with her boyfriend about, or what not.She had even gotten into a fight with one of her friends. It was stupid and Lessa realized it now but the girl was still mad at Lessa and Lessa didn't understand why. She'd apologize for it and told her that she was really sorry for saying what she had but Lessa thought the girl needed to hear it. She needed to move on. It was obvious the guy no longer had feelings for her, if he had feelings for her to begin with. None of their other friends had wanted to tell her that, but Lessa believing that honesty was the best policy, so lame I know, had told her the truth. The girl hadn't liked the truth so well and she hadn't appreciated Lessa being the one to give it to her. Lessa just hoped that it would all blow over and that she'd realize Lessa was only doing it because she cared about her and hated seeing her hurt. Later on, she had confronted the guy about it and basically told him where he could go, not angel-like really but Lessa didn't care. She hated people who used her friends and that had basically been what that jerk had done.
Though Lessa wanted a boyfriend just like any other girl, and though she had chased after her fair share of guys, for right now she was taking it little by little. If one happen to come along that was interested in her, and she was interested in him, then so be it, until then she was going to enjoy the day she had gotten by herself. Walking around town, alone, was what Lessa had decided to do with her time. Though the more she walked the more she realized she was really hungry. Looking around her, she realized she had made her way to her favorite place and hadn't even been planning on going there. When she walked inside, she realized everybody and their mother was where she wanted to eat. In fact she could find one empty seat in the place. Well, actually just one but the other side of the table was occupied by this really tall, long haired guy that Lessa had seen around the school. She knew of him, he was a drifter like her, but she was also emo so their paths didn't cross a whole lot.
Smiling as she made her way over to his table, she put on a sweet, charming smile, "May I join you?" Waiting on his answer, she took in his appearance. He was actually really cute and a good foot taller then Lessa. She was rather tall considering most of her friends were way shorter than her. She stood at 5 foot 7 and she had always loved her height. The funny thing was the thought that popped into her head a little later. She was slightly glad that the place was crowded and the only other place to sit was across from him. After that thought came the thought of the fact that he was a gifted human, she'd heard it around school, but she had no idea what his gift was. Please don't let it be mind reading. That would be almost perfect. Not really but Lessa was being sarcastic. It was one of the few qualities she wished she didn't have. Either way though her day of being alone had just changed, and for the better. Or so Lessa hoped. Everyone said he was nice, she hoped it was true.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not Hearing people’s thoughts weren’t always a bad thing. It came in handy during school if Laken didn’t remember the answer to a question a teacher asked then Laken could merely prod around the teachers head and find out the answer before the teacher would even notice. It was also good when he was comforting someone who was sad because many people came to him for that. It made it easier because he could simply know what was wrong without them having to spill out every gory detail, even though Laken already knew it. Some people didn’t appreciate his ability to get in their business but Laken would never tell another person someone’s personal thoughts, he was kind of like the entire school’s vault of secrets.
At this moment Laken could hear every single thing that those teenagers were thinking. There was a girl named Cori who had stolen another girl’s boyfriend and felt horrible about it. There was a big group of guys checking out the girls and Laken tried his hardest to avoid their vulgar thought. Then there were a few parents there comparing their children to the others, thinking how much better they were. It wasn’t always pretty knowing what everyone was thinking because you could see the worse sides of them and sometimes you just didn’t want to know that. Laken has known from expierence what his abilities could bring out in people, so he always strived to avoid voicing someone else’s thoughts before seriously thinking about it first.
When the girl that had just walked in made her way to Laken’s table her thoughts slowly became more and more audible. Apparently she was in a fight with a friend and she didn’t quite get why the other girl was mad at her. It was typical girl drama that Laken heard all the time in other girl’s heads. Of course even though Lake knew the whole story by now he wasn’t going to bring it up with her because there is a line that a mind reader shouldn’t cross and that’s privacy. It was a hard lesson that Laken had to learn but over time after severe discipline he has mastered the ability to not invade someone’s privacy completely by telling the world about their thoughts.
”Of course,” Laken said, scooting back in his chair a bit because his legs were stretched out beneath the other chair. There was no way that Laken would tell someone that hey couldn’t join him, Laken may not want to invade someone’s space but he still wanted to have contact with other people. Since the only way he really knew how to be sociable was to be nice and polite that was what he was known for, for being kind and caring. In short Laken was likable and he tried his best to be so.
When he heard her thoughts, concerned that he was a mind reader a small smile slipped across his face. Apparently she knew of him, like almost everybody in the school, for him being nice. She didn’t seem to know what his ability was and was concerned that he could read her mind. Most people were worried about what he would find but the majority of them trusted him enough not to tell someone else their thoughts. ”Sorry to disappoint,” Laken said before taking a sip of Dr. Pepper. ”I’m Laken Toss by the way, though I think you’ve heard of me. Sadly though I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you, may I know your name?” Every word Laken just spoke was dripping with kindness and sincerity.

Lessa smiled when he said that he could join her, not that she thought he'd say now. But still, either way, it was nice to hear a yes. As she sat down, the waitress made her way over to the table and Lessa ordered the exact same thing laken had, only she hadn't noticed that was what he had ordered to until the waitress left Lessa payed closer attention to his plate in front of him. He hadn't eaten any of it. "Well, I'll say this for you, you've got excellent taste." As she looked at him, she glanced down at his plate so he'd know what she was talking about.
When she realized he had asked if he could know what her name was, she nodded, "It's Lessa. Nice to finally meet you, Laken. I've heard a lot about you.." It was true, she had. Most girls either really liked him, as friends, mostly. Or they wanted to date him. Though he seemed to not be the type to date. She wasn't sure. This was just what she heard from other people. Either way, whether he knew it or not, he had a lot of girls after him. Though most of them wouldn't admit that hey even likied him in the least. She wasn't sure why. If they were like her, she knew why. She'd been keeping guys out of her heart for way too long, doing it came second nature to Lessa.
A few minutes later, her food arrived and she took a bite of her burger. She was never one to really pay much attention to how much she ate, though she did have quite an appetite. Her mom and sister were always jealous that she could eat whatever and not gain any weight while they had to watch everything they ate. She enjoyed it though. It was a small little reward for her having to put up with mer mom and her sister's perfect attitudes. It proved that they weren't so perfect after all.
Looking up at Laken again, she smiled just a little, "So, I know you go to my school and I know your a gifted human so may I ask what your power is?" She was also a gifted hum, mixed with a little angel so she had a power of her own. She kinda figured that he would ask her what hers was. And she had no problem with telling him what it was. She adored her power. Though she did have trouble with it at times. It was hard trying to focus on it enough to keep it up and sometimes she failed, other times it worked out pretty well.
Her power was Shielding, both mentally and pysically. Smiling just slightly, she put up her should around her mind, making her thoughts her own. If his power had anything to do with reading minds then he could no longer read hers now. It was a great ability to have and most of the time, she always kept it up but others she'd let if falter and some people would get into her mind. For some reason, the later of the two had happened now, with Laken and she wasn't sure why. She shrugged it off and waited on his reply.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not The comment that the girl made on Laken’s food only made him realize that he had barely even touched the burger on his plate. Maybe if the entire room wasn’t thinking so loud and obnoxiously then Laken could concentrate on his food. However Laken couldn’t control this many people’s thoughts, actually Laken could control very few people’s minds. It all depended on the level of strength the person’s will was at. Someone with a very strong will was near impossible for Laken to control, but a weak person was the easiest to manipulate. Now lets set some things straight, Laken doesn’t particularly enjoy controlling people, but he wouldn’t mind quieting the whole entire rooms thoughts so he could eat in peace for once in his life.
”Nice to meet you too Lessa,” Laken said a friendly smile on his face before he took a big bite of his burger. As he was chewing her heard her thoughts about the girls in the school, yes Laken knew what these girls thought of him. However even though many girls seemed to like him Laken couldn’t find it in him to have any feelings for them besides friends. It was as if his insides were numb and he could only feel the basics, like anger, sadness, and happiness. With all of his heart he wished he could love someone and that someone could love him but Laken saw it as something that would never happen, impossible.
When Lessa asked what Laken’s power was he thought a few seconds on whether or not he should tell her. Many people knew of his power but the ones who just find out usually freak out because they don’t like having their thoughts read. If it was Laken having his thoughts read he wouldn’t like it in the slightest. It wouldn’t be Laken’s idea of cool to have someone know about everything that he’s thinking or that has gone on in his life, which was the reason why he tried his hardest not to pry in on other people’s lives too.
”Mind reader,” Laken mumbled and listened to her thoughts to see her reaction, but something strange happened. He couldn’t hear a single thing. It wasn’t like she was an empty headed bimbo that had no thoughts, but it was as if he was being blocked out of her head. It was the most peculiar thing to Laken. All of his life Laken has been hearing everyone’s thoughts and then now all of a sudden nothing, absolutely nothing. It was odd at first but then it was relaxing and Laken found if he concentrated hard enough on just Lessa, the volume of the room slowed down to a steady chatter.
”And if I’m guessing correctly you are a Shield,” Laken said and took a fry from the large pile that was situated next to his burger. ”I can’t help but wander why I haven’t met you before,” Laken said curiously. Seriously, if Laken could have met Lessa earlier he was certain that he could have had a lot more quieter days in his life. But maybe it was because she was a Shield that he didn’t notice her because he couldn’t hear her. The main reason Laken’s attention was adverted to someone was because of their thoughts, but if Laken couldn’t hear Lessa that would explain so much.

Truth be told, Lessa probably would have had a problem with the fact that he was a mind reader but being that she was a shield and could block him out when she wanted and let him in when she didn't want him blocked, she didn't care. She wasn't normally one to like having people in her head, and though she did know quite a few mind readers, she had the ability to block them if she didn't want them there.
With Laken, she didn't really mind it, not really. But she also knew that her being a shiled was probably a relief for him. If he focused enough attention on her then he could block out everyone else's thoughts in the room, to a certain extent anyways. And she could tell that right now tht was exactly what he was doing. She smiled and let down her shiled for a moment, By the way, it doesn't bother me that your a mind reader. Probably because I can shield you out, when I want. Either way, I just wanted you to know.
Laughing just slightly at the fact that she thought it rather then saying it, she put her shiled back up, letting him focus in on her again. She knew that her friends that were mind readers did it often, that was the one thing they liked about having Lessa around. They could focus on her and not hear everyone else as loud.
When he made the comment about what she was, she nodded, "You would be guessing right... I can shield my mind with no problem, and myself for the most part but i still have trouble shielding people around me. I'm working on that one. I've only ever been able to shiled a few people along with myself.." She wasn't going to go into detail about who those few people were. Her dad for one, she loved him. And an exboyfried. Who she pretty much despised now but there again, she wasn't going to go into that. She didn't have the patience to think about that at all. Focusing in on him, she had a thought pop into her mind and she wasn't sure whether she should ask it outloud or think it in her head and let him answer it.
Smiling, she brought her shield down again, So, I'm doing all my talking in my head... but.. I have one small question for you.. Do you like that I'm a shield and not just because you can focus in on me and these other people's thoughts aren't so loud.. but just because.. She trailed off after that and started to eat her fries slowly. Most hated the Lessa was a shield because most wanted to know what went on in her head, but when it came to them wanting to give away from everyone's thoughts, they loved that she was. She had mized emotions about it but it wasn't like she had to always shield her mind. If she were ever to be put into a situation to where she couldn't make herself say something then she could think it and everything would be okay.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not It was a great feeling for Laken to be able to be at peace within his own head. Many people didn’t understand what it was like to always be overwhelmed with constant noise. It was like being stuck in a room with thousands of little speakers that lined the walls and each one of them made a different sound. Then imagine living in that room for all your life and never finding any source of quiet unless you found a secluded spot, but that was hard to come by now in days. However oddly right now Laken was at peace in a crowded room that would normally result in him having a massive headache for hours and all of this was thanks to one person that Laken had just met, Lessa.
As Laken ate his burger he continued to concentrate solely on Lessa’s mind, but then just as he was starting to eat his fries the barrier between their two minds broke and all the thoughts in the room came rushing in. Without thinking about it Laken’s free hand went to his ear, trying to block out the intense amount of noise. Then Lessa addressed him, but not with her words but with her thoughts. It was something that Laken was used to, many people who wanted to divulge a secret to him all they would do is simply think it and know that the only way for it to be heard was if another mind reader was in the area. There were even times when Laken would rarely get near another mind reader and they would have a mild conversation about how noisy it was within their own minds.
In response to Lessa’s comment all he did was nod his head, indicating that he understood. There were a few people that actually avoided Laken because of his mind reading abilities. Hell even Laken wouldn’t like having his mind invaded, so its not like he was offended when someone would see him and turn the other way, hoping that he hadn’t heard whatever was on their mind. However since Laken is a mind reader himself he has learned to block out things from the other mind readers, but still nobody liked having their privacy invaded, some more so than others.
”That is good progress,” Laken stated as he chomped down on his fries and the barrier between the two had risen again, much to Laken’s relief. ”So far I can just read minds and… a few other things.” Laken had almost told her that he was working on mind control, but he quickly stopped. Not many people liked the idea of him being able to control their thoughts and actions, so he simply kept it to himself. Although Laken was almost positive that she would be curious about his statement Laken decided to ignore what he had said and continue eating as if he hadn’t said anything abnormal.
Then just as suddenly as the wall came down and went up a few moments ago the barrier between the two was down again and Lessa questioned Laken again through her thoughts. Laken paused for a minute before responding to her. ”I do like that just focusing on you can dim out the shouting in the room,” Laken said slowly, making sure that his words were coming out right. ”However it is a little bit weird not knowing what you are thinking when I’ve always known everyone’s thoughts ever since I could remember.” Laken paused for another second as he took a sip out of his drink then looked back at Lessa with his shockingly green eyes. ”The flip side of what I just mentioned is that it is a nice change to not know everything about you. You’re the first person I can actually talk to and not know every double meaning behind a statement or the opinions forming in your head about me. It makes me feel normal.”
”Now tell me something,” Laken said leaning back in his chair and stretching one of his long legs out of the side of the table. ”You seem to be apprehensive about your gift. Why is that?”

Lessa had eaten half of her burger and most of her fries by now and she had leaned back against her chair to listen to him. It was rather easy to be around him. Talking came second nature and it wasn't something she had to think too hard about. It didn't hurt any at all that he was really cute and nice, as everyone had said he was. But she couldn't help but wonder if anything would ever happen between the two. Right now though, Lessa would settle with them being friends, right now that was enough.
When he made the comment that he could read minds and then started to say something else but quickly covered it up, the wheels in Lessa's mind starting spinning. No way was she going to let him get away with that. He was this close to saying something else and lessa wanted to know what it was, "And what else? Come on, you were so close to saying it.. so just tell me." She wasn't sure what it was but it must have been something that he didn't want other peple to know about. And in that case, Lessa wanted to know exactly what it was.
She smiled semi-sweetly at him, "Come on. I promise not to get mad, or upset or tell anyone.. or anything.. but I really wanna know. You've curved my curiousty." Lessa was just curious by nature. She should have been half cat or something. She'd always been rather curious about most things, if not everything. But being as to that fact, she was actually a very bright person. She liked learning new things and it was a reward to her to be able to figure something out for herself.
When he answered her question, she nodded her head. "Yeah, I thought you'd like it in someway but not be happy about it for other reasons.." She watched him lean back in his chair and stretch one of his legs out the side of the table, then he asked why she was apprehensive about her gift. She shook her head just slightly, "I'm not really apprehensive about it.. It's just I wish I could shield people pysically like I can mentally. It's starting to bug me that I haven't figured it out yet. My sister's had it mastered for a year or so now and I still can't do it.."
She sighed a little as she looked at the food on her plate, "I can only shield people pysically that mean a lot to me.." She lsughed just slightly, "I can't shield my mom or my sister.. and they both know why.." The only reason she couldn't shield them was because they were always giving Lessa a hard time about everything and she disliked them very much for it. Her dad would work with her, he loved her bt she still felt that something was wrong with her because her mom and sister hated her so much.
At the statement of the fact that she could only shield people that meant something to her, she smiled a little. "I'm gonna experiment on you, okay?" She had to know if she'd be able to shield Laken or not. It would be very interesting if she could. She smiled as she concentrated on him. At first it didn't seem like she'd be able to but slowly it rose to cover Laken as well as herself. She giggled just slightly at the fact and then looked at him, "Apparently, you mean something to me.." She wasn't sure what just yet but she was rather happy with it.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not For some reason Laken really enjoyed talking with Lessa. The fact that she could help block out all of the people in the room was a contributing factor but there was something else. Maybe it was the unpredictability of the conversation because he didn’t know what she was thinking or what she was about to say before the words came out of her mouth. Laken hadn’t had a normal conversation in all of his life and he was enjoying it greatly. Most people take for granted just being able to have a conversation with someone, but for Laken it was something that was rare and unheard of. However Laken had a feeling that even if he could read her thoughts that maybe he would be having a good time anyways.
It would have been stupid for Laken to assume that Lessa would ignore his unfinished statement about what all he could do. Naturally people become curious when someone says something unfinished, it just makes them want more. Laken knew this because of the access he has to so many peoples minds, so even when he couldn’t read Lessa’s mind he could still tell what she was thinking based on normal thought patterns. Of course Laken knew not every single person thought like everybody else, but Laken could still generalize and predict things pretty well without his mind reading.
”Well I’m kind of working on mind control,” Laken said after a sigh. ”Please don’t tell anyone, I don’t want people to be even more freaked out by me.” Even though Lessa had said that she wouldn’t tell anyone, Laken still had to be sure. Since he couldn’t read her mind he couldn’t tell if she was sincere or not. People have been known to lie to Laken’s face and right when they did he knew it, but with Lessa there was no way of knowing if she was being truthful or not. Maybe an average person who was used to dealing with people without reading their minds could be able to tell if someone is sincere by the tone of voice or body language but since Laken has always been able to hear someone’s thoughts there was never a need to pay attention to things like that.
While Laken listened to Lessa’s explanations of her true feelings about her gifts he couldn’t help but wander how they worked. If Laken could have a chance to dig around in her head he was she he’d be able to figure out how it worked. Laken has done that before with other gifted humans, without their knowledge but there is no need to tell them that. However Laken couldn’t really figure out how the other species differences worked, maybe it was because he wasn’t one himself that he couldn’t quite grasp it. Either way he was curious but of course he wouldn’t be able to prod around Lessa’s head without her permission, so Laken decided that it could wait until they became closer, well if they became closer.
Laken has always had issues with close relationships. Usually people learn about relationships from an extremely young age, starting with their parents and siblings. However Laken never had that bond or at least he couldn’t remember it. His parents didn’t like that he was different and treated him horribly because of it. Subsequently he has always been apprehensive about other people and thought that he was completely unlovable. Though the majority of the school liked him greatly there was a difference between love and likeability.
Then when Lessa decided to try and shield Laken he tensed up for a moment, not quite sure if he would like this. However he let Lessa do her thing, not wanting to discourage her from expanding her powers because Laken knew he wouldn’t like it if someone tried to stop him from improvement. Laken was just sitting there waiting for something to happen when suddenly it was silence. It was like there was a soundproof barrier between him and the room. Laken was sure that she was putting up a physical barrier but maybe because it was linked to Lessa Laken was able to block out the room and it was amazing feeling. It was even better than concentrating on her mind.
”Hmmmm,” Laken murmured when she pointed out that he must mean something to her. This was something new to Laken; he never really meant anything to anyone before. Sure he had a few friends, but they weren’t close enough to him to be anything all too meaningful. There was also the fact that he was one of the most liked guys in school, but once again there was no deeper meaning to it, just that he was a pretty well liked guy. So this was new to Laken and he really didn’t know what to make of it. ”Well that’s odd…” Laken said more to himself than to Lessa.

Lessa smiled and concentrated on keeping the shield up. She knew that since it was linked to her, his world had gone quiet because he couldn't hear peoples thoughts. She knew he must be enjoying it and with her dads help, she had learned how to shield without it taking so much out of her. Plus, the fact that she didn't shield a whole lot of people, and that she was a big ball of energy helped out the situation.
When he finally told her what else he had been learning to do and asked her not to tell anyone, she just shook her head. Then a thought occured to her.. but she wasn't sure that it would be able to work. Either way, she tried it. Keeping the pysical shield up around the two of them, she lowered her shield for her mind. Then she addressed him through her thoughts, 'Laken?' She wasn't sure if it had worked but she wanted to give it a try anyways, 'Can you hear me?' She hoped that it had worked.
Smiling just a little, she shook her head, 'I won't tell anyone Laken.' And she did actually mean it. She wouldn't do that to him. She wanted to know but it wasn't so she could go blab to people about it. Truth be told, she really liked Laken, more than she should for just meeting him but she couldn't deny the fact that she thought he was cute, sweet, easy to talk to and the fact that she couild shield him was a plus. That meant a lot with Lessa.
It was, in fact, odd though. Lessa wasn't a very trusting person and she had never been good with relationships with guys. They all lied to her, or she was trying to get with them for the wrong reasons, they used her or something else just as bad. She could never understand why guys lied. It was stupid in her opinion and Lessa had learned early that she would only ever be loved by one man in her life. And that was her dad. Perhaps that was why she could always shield him and hardly ever anyone else.
Until now with Laken which had to mean something, didn't it? Lessa always thought things over too much and this would be no different. She's pander about this for days, probably never really getting an answer. That is, unless something did actually happen between the two of them. That would be Lessa's answer. Whether or not anything happened between the two. If Lessa had anything to do with it, it would. Hopefully the rumors about Laken not dating were just rumors. If not, then maybe she could change his mind. She wasn't real sure right now.
When Laken said that it was odd that he meant something to her, she just nodded. It was just a little weird. She had just met him, really didn't know him. But from what she did know, he was a good guy. She couldn't begin to explain how happy she was about it though. Looking down at her plate and then it has, she glanced up at him, "You wanna get out of here?" She spoke outloud again. She knew the crowd in the place was bugging him, even though now with her shileding him, it really didn't matter.
Either way, she was kinda tired of the loud chatter coming from all the different little groups in the room and it would be nice to get away from it. But she would leave it up to him. "That is if you don't mind my company a little longer?" She smiled as she said this, winking at him. 'Please say yes, please say yes.' It hadn't occured to Lessa that she still had the shield around her mind down until a few seconds later. 'Crap' She shook her head and laughed at herself. Waiting on his response.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not The silence that was filling Laken’s mind was unbelievable. He could hear his own thoughts without having to try and tell them apart from other peoples. Sometimes in seriously crowded areas Laken had a hard time thinking for himself with all of the thoughts that just seemed to be pouring into his head. So this absolute silence was amazing. It was probably the first time that Laken had felt true peace in his own mind. Most people could escape into their head and zone out but that was never possible for Lake, always having somebody else’s thoughts stuck in his head.
Just as Laken was savoring the silence he suddenly heard something. It was weird though, it was as if Laken could only hear Lessa’s thoughts and no one else’s. That was probably because it was just the two of them inside a protective bubble so the whole restaurants thoughts didn’t get in but Laken still could hear her thoughts, once the barrier in her mind was down that is. ”Yeah I can hear you,” Laken said with a smile, thinking how cool it would be to be able to project his thoughts into someone else’s mind so he could just have a conversation in their minds. That was actually a good idea… maybe he would work on that as well as mind control; they both kind of ran together.
”Thanks,” he said with his dazzling, kind smile. It was nice to know that even though Laken couldn’t read her mind all the time she was telling the truth. It was kind of hard to trust people when you know all the lies that everybody around you tells and how they can say them with such a straight face and without a care. It doesn’t matter if someone is simply lying about homework, it is still unnerving to know that people can lie and not care about it. Just having the knowledge of the amount of lying that goes on would make anybody have trouble trusting someone just on their words, especially if you could hear their thoughts.
When Lessa mentioned them leaving the restaurant Laken was more than willing to leave. Being stuck in the small crowded area was torturous, well it was until Lessa came in. Even with just concentrating on her though it was still irritating, but the protective bubble was something that Laken had always dreamed of. So as long as Laken could be with her and keep everything quiet or at least on a dim he would go. Besides he had already finished all of his food and the waitress was starting to walk by the table more and more, obviously needing the space.
Just as he was about to answer her by saying yes he heard her thoughts. She kept repeating the same thing, wanting him to say yes. It made Laken smile, hearing the hope in her thoughts. It was an odd feeling, somebody wanting to be near him. Sure, there were plenty of girls at school that wanting to be near him, but it was more of a pining and Lessa’s thoughts felt different. Then when she used a mild swear word Laken couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Laken did know that he shouldn’t be laughing at her thoughts, but it was pretty amusing when she hit her realization that he could hear her thoughts.
”Of course I’d like to leave with you,” Laken said and stood up to his full 6 foot 7 inch height. There were several places that Laken could think of going, but he honestly didn’t care. As long as he had his little buffer, Lessa, with him he didn’t care. It wasn’t as if Laken was just using her so she could block out everyone’s thoughts, no not in the slightest. Laken enjoyed her company, she was a good person to talk to, so Laken was totally fine going anywhere with her. ”Where do you want to go?” He asked as he handed the waitress the money for both their meals, that was the gentlemanly thing to do after all, and left the tip on the table.

Lessa was excitied that he had worked and he could in fact hear her without hearing everyone else too. When he said thanks, she just nodded her head. "Its no problem." She would never do anything to lose whatever trust she had in Laken, or to make it falter. She enjoyed his comapny and would never do anything to hurt or make him mad.
Lessa didn't really know what to think of the fact that he was laughing at her, "Why are you laughing at me?" She stood to her feet, all too ready to pay for her food but he paid for it himself. As they finally left the busy restaurant, she looked up at him, "You didn't have to pay for mine.. but thanks.." She pulled on his arm, to get him to lower himself to her and she kissed his cheek lightly.
Afterwards, she let go of his arm and started walking around. "Well I wasn't really sure.. I just really wanted to get out of there is all.." She hadn't really thought past the accomplishment of getting him to leave with her. And she still couldn't get over the fact that he had said yes. But now she could think about it all she wanted and he wouldn't know. She had lifted her shield once again. But she also kept the shield around the two of them up.
She wanted him to enjoy the quiet as much as he could and for right now she still felt fine. She'd have to work at this though. She couldn't be getting all weak and like passing out and crap. That would not be good. And she couldn't exactly practice on Laken because he would so she'd have to find another guinea pig, so to speak. Someone that would never really know what she was doing.
That wouldn't really be too hard. As long as she was in a crowd of people, and she stayed close to the person without them freaking out then she'd be fine. As they walked, she looked around her, "Any place you'd like to go?" She turned to look at him once again, tilting her head up so she could see him. "I gotta start wearing heels around you.." She didn't mind the height really, it was just something she wasn't use to.
Lessa's dad was rather tall but her mom and sister were both shorter than her. As well as most of her friends. All her girl friends were shorter then her and Lessa was dead on with most of the guys. There were only a few people at the school that she could think of that were as tall as Laken but she really didn't talk to them much, none at all really.
"So, I really don't mean to be nosy as well as rude and you can totally tell me that its none of my business... but I hear from a lot of people that you don't date and that you'd rather be friends then anything more. Is this true? And may I ask why?" She smiled as she looked up at him. She wasn't trying to be mean, just her own curiousity coming back again.
Lessa wished that she could read his mind sometimes now that she really thought about it. She wasn't sure what he thought of her. Besides the fact that he liked having her around because she was a shield and she could block him out from the world. Which she assumed hadn't happened before. Other then that, she had no idea at all.
As she looked up at him to await his response, she really paid attention to his hair. It was long and seemed a little unkept but it suit him nonetheless and Lessa really liked it. She smiled some as she lifted her arm to brush some of it out of his face. 'What the hell are you doing, Lessa? He's gonna think you're insane..' At this thought she lowered her hand and stuck it in her pocket, not even believing she had just done that.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not Thankfully when they walked out of the crowded restaurant Lessa kept the protective bubble around Laken so he could block out the people that walked by on the street. When walking threw crowded places it was almost more annoying then sitting still in it. Instead of hearing a steady stream of thoughts Laken would receive snippets depending on how close the other people were. Seriously Laken needed to hang out with Lessa more if he could have a shield around him like this at least a third of the time. However Laken wasn’t using her just for her ability to make everything go quiet, Lessa was good company.
It was kind of unexpected when Lessa grabbed his arm and pulled him down to kiss him on the cheek. For a second he froze, but only for a second because he couldn’t let Lessa think that anything was wrong with him. Its not like it was the first time a girl put a move on him, not that Laken classified Lessa’s move as putting a move on him. However girls have bombarded Laken with a lot more than just a kiss on the cheek. There was just something about Lessa that made him freeze, maybe it was the sincerity and kindness behind the gesture and that wasn’t something that Laken was used to.
”Well, we could just walk around,” Laken suggested then laughed about her comment about his height. Many people felt the same way that Lessa did when they were around him. Being freakishly tall at 6 foot 7 inches tall made people uncomfortable. Probably because his height was intimidating and craning your neck up to look at him when talking could become quite annoying. There were very few people back at the school that were as tall as Laken, so he stood out in the crowd, making him even more recognizable to add to his reputation for being nice and friendly.
Then when Lessa asked Laken about the rumors going around school that he didn’t date, actually they weren’t rumors because they were true. Laken didn’t date. It’s not like he didn’t want to have a girlfriend, but he believed that it was impossible. From everything that Laken has experienced in his life the only conclusion that he could come up for as to why everything has happened to him is that he wasn’t meant to be loved that he was simply unlovable. If somebody else had been through Laken’s life they would think that they were unlovable too. Nobody knew what Laken thought of himself though, so nobody quite understood why he turned down every girl that approached him, no matter how good looking or smart they were.
”Um well…” Laken started to say but he wasn’t quite sure what he was going to say. Maybe he could tell her why and she wouldn’t try to convince him otherwise or maybe she would freak out and try to convince him that he could have love. Laken didn’t need to hear what he knew was wrong, so he never bothered disclosing why he always turned down girls. So Laken decided that he would go with a reason that was acceptable and maybe partly true. ”I just haven’t found someone I truly like,” Laken said not looking at her face because he knew that he was a bad liar and it would show on his face.
Then Lessa did something that totally contradicted everything he felt, sure it was a small gesture but it was like the kiss on his cheek, kind and sincere. It made Laken stop in his tracks with a boggled look on his face. He had no idea what possessed Lessa to do that, not just because he couldn’t read her mind but because he never thought that it would happen. However Laken realized that he probably looked like a fool just standing there looking confused so with a slight shake of his head, as if he was shaking himself back into reality, he said, ”So what about you? Any guys in your life?”

Lessa smiled when he said they could just walk around and that sounded like a pretty good idea to her. "Okay, let's walk.." She continued down the street for a bit until the fact that she was still shielding Laken, which took a lot of her concentration as well as her strength. When they arrived to a couple benches in front of some cute little antique shop, she grabbed Laken's hand and pulled him over to them, "I need to sit.." She wasn't really sure if he could tell that something was wrong or not but she was certain that she was just before passing out on him.
When the two sit, she linked her arm in his and rested her head on his shoulder. After answering her question about the dating thing, she kinda nodded her head a little, "I'm not trying to say that your lying but I'm not sure that that's the total truth.." She sighed just slightly as she closed her eyes, "I know plenty of girls who would love to be with you, and its kind of hard to believe that you haven't liked one of them enough to date them.. But I will let it be. It seems to be something that you don't like to talk about and I'm not gonna push you on it."
When he asked the question that she knew was coming, she wasn't really sure how to answer it. She didn't like the fact that he hadn't given her the whole truth about it so she shouldn't not tell him the truth either. She sighed as she began to explain, "Well, I don't have any guys in my life, not in the way were talking about, but its mostly because I always go after the wrong one's. They either want me for the wrong reasons or they lie to me to get what they want from me and then they dump me.."
Lessa wanted to tell him that she use to chase guys just to feel loved but she didn't know if that was a good idea. Deciding that she really didn't care, and that he would find out eventually, she just decided to tell him, "I use to chase guys just so I'd feel loved by them. For years my dad has been the only man in my life that I felt I could count on. Every other guy broke my heart for whatever reason." She trailed off after that to look up at Laken and then she finished, "I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a very lovable girl so I've given up.."
It was the truth, the whole truth. The truth that nobody else knew. So, yeah, everyone knew that she chased most guys, or that she use to. But nobody knew why. She'd never trusted anyone, male or female, enough to give them a reason as to why she did it. And now, a reason as to why she had stopped. She wasn't a slut, though most thought she was. She had actually only slept with one guy. Her very first boyfriend whom she dated almost a year before she slept with him.
After that relationship ended, only because he had gotten what he wanted from Lessa. The very next day he was loving on some other girl right in front of Lessa. It was heartbreaking for Lessa and the point in her life where everything seemed to fall apart. It was unbelievable and Lessa hated it. "So far, you're the only one that knows my reasoning for not chasing guys anymore and giving up on the whole finding love thing." Part of her didn't know why she had told him the truth. She could have easily given him the same answer he had given her but she wasn't going to start her relationship off with Laken lying to him.
Lessa just hoped that whatever his views on her didn't change any after she had been truthful with him. It was hard for Lessa to trust people and Laken was no different. Though she did have to admit that she trusted him a lot more then she trusted most guys. There was just something different about him and Lessa was now determined to find out exactly what that was.

we've got it good whether you like this town or not It wasn’t like Laken thought that the vague answer he gave would be enough of a response, well he hoped it would be, but he knew it wouldn’t. If that made any sense… well it did to Laken. Laken didn’t particularly enjoy lying, but it was something that he had grown used to with his childhood, even though he wasn’t very good at it. Maybe if Laken was a better liar as a child he wouldn’t have had such a hard time, but there was no changing Laken’s inability to lie like a master, so he had to endure what came his way.
As Lessa began to tell Laken about her history with guys he couldn’t help but notice how comfortable she was around him. Probably because she didn’t have to worry about Laken intruding in her thoughts that she could actually relax around him, unlike many other people that Laken has encountered. It took a lot out of him not to squirm out from the grasp she had on his arm, but he knew if he did that she would be confused and hurt. Laken was tired of doing that to people, but he couldn’t help it. So he decided that he would make an effort with Lessa because she seemed to be a genuinely nice person and there was also the bonus of her abilities.
Another unnerving thing about this situation was that from what Lessa said Laken could relate to her. It wasn’t that Laken went out with a lot of girls and chose the wrong ones, Laken didn’t date much. There have been the rare occasions that Laken would agree to a date but they always ended the same way, the girl bugging him about why he was so distant or wanting Laken for more than his personality. Its not that Laken was an inexperienced virgin, no he was far from that, it was just that Laken has never been emotionally involved with someone before. The thing that was so similar about the both of them was that they both feel unlovable.
From here the conversation should probably go to Laken telling Lessa about him feeling the same way, but he wasn’t sure if he wanted to disclose that. Yeah it should seem harmless to tell her that he felt that he couldn’t be loved too, but with Laken it had a much deeper meaning than just meeting the wrong kind of guys. However Laken didn’t want to get into that stuff, there was no way he was going to discuss what has happened in the past because he wanted to live in the now and savor the fact that his life was going pretty damn well. So the main thing that was going through Laken’s head was whether or not to tell Lessa that he felt unlovable too.
Making his decision Laken finally spoke up and said, ”Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone… I feel the same way about myself.” Laken figured that the response he gave was sufficient because he let Lessa know he felt the same way she did, but didn’t tell her why. He just left his statement open to assume that he went through the same things with girls that Lessa did with guys. Even though Laken has gone out a few times with some not so nice girls, they weren’t the reasons why he felt so unlovable. The reason Laken felt unlovable was far from why Lessa felt like she couldn’t be loved. Now all Laken could do was hope that she would assume that when he said he felt the same way about himself that she would believe that he had bad luck with girls and gave up and not want to know the true reason behind his feelings.
