THE SCHOOL CLIQUES
It is not always easy deciding which category your character best fits into so here is a vague description of the cliques seen in schools so that you can decide where they would fit the best. If there is a clique that I have missed or you feel I have wrongly described something then please inform me and I will edit the post accordingly. In Australia (where I am from) there is not a lot of emphasis on cliques such as jocks and cheerleaders because we don't really have those in schools much.
definition; a clique is an exclusive group of people who share interests, views, purposes, patterns of behavior, or ethnicity. A clique as a reference group can be either normative or comparative. Membership in a clique is often, but not necessarily, exclusive, and qualifications for membership may be social or essential to the nature of the clique.
THE POPULAR GROUP:
This is generally the crowd that come from middle and upper class families and consists of people who are well liked by most of the groups, except those they come in direct contact with. Generally they gravitate towards the jocks and cheerleaders when it comes to party invites and some of the group are considered to be members of both the popular and jock categories. Seen as mainstream airheads by other groups.
THE PREPS & CHEERLEADERS:
very social and good at being rich, often have a good sense of style and set the fashion trends for the school. They can be considered stuck up and snobbish by those who are not of their kind. Can be members of the popular group. They are often invited to all the best parties. The losers want to be them and the girls want to be their friends. Seen as mainstream airheads by other groups. They tend to be blonde and wear pink (though not always, naturally).
THE JOCKS:
Typically your sports players, often very good at football/basketball or whatever the main played sport is at the school. They often date prep girls and can also be considered part of the popular group. Most of them pray for scholarships to colleges of their choice (all to play sports of course) and can often be seen at events with the popular group. Considered to be very self-important by other groups.
THE NERDS, THE BRAINS & THE GEEKS:
Typically those who are rather intelligent, often top of the class or near enough to it. They generally get asked to pair with people during classes because of their higher level of intelligence but are often ridiculed behind their backs because they spend a lot of time on homework, studying and generally bettering themselves academically. Usually they get higher paid jobs once they graduate.
THE GOTHS:
Goths are noted, typically, for their dress sense. Styles of dress within the subculture range from deathrock, punk, androgynous, Victorian, some Renaissance and Medieval style attire, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair. Defining an explicit ideology for the gothic subculture is difficult for several reasons. First is the overwhelming importance of mood and aesthetic for those involved. This is, in part, inspired by romanticism and neoromanticism. The allure for goths of dark, mysterious, and morbid imagery and mood lies in the same tradition of Romanticism's gothic novel. Goths may, indeed, have political leanings ranging from left-wing to right-wing, but they do not express them specifically as part of a cultural identity. Instead, political affiliation, like religion, is seen as a matter of personal conscience.
THE EMOS:
VERY different from the Goth subculture (if I do not put this then my sister, who is goth, will cut my head off, seriously!) though similar in some ways. Emo is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as the emo subculture. Usually among teens, the term "emo" is stereotyped with wearing skinny jeans, sometimes in bright colors, and tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands. Studded belts and black wristbands are common accessories in emo fashion. Black Converse sneakers and skate shoes, such as Vans, are popularly worn among people of the emo fashion. Some males also wear thick, black horn-rimmed glasses. Emo has been associated with a stereotype that includes being particularly emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. It has also been associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide.
THE BAND GEEKS:
In band and maybe orchestra, choir, or other musical clubs. Tend to be clean cut, and fairly smart may also be jocks or brains on occasion. They often, naturally, play a variety of instruments. In popular culture they are noted for the saying "this one time, at band camp..." which usually means that you don't want to know the rest of the sentence. Sometimes they are ridiculed for their love of music, often classical pieces.
THE SKATERS:
Typically this is someone who actually skates. Emphasis is on the word "dude" which is used a lot. Slang is mostly skating related. Depending on the region of the country and their attention to clothing, they could be considered a subset of other groups as well.
THE LOSERS & THE LONERS:
Typically those that no-one wanted to hang out with. Often the misfits and tended to be loners though they often grouped together for protection from the jocks. These are the kind of people who spent days locked in their lockers or with massive wedgies. They often came from lower-class families.
THE DRAMA CLUB:
Usually a mixture of the groups. Often involved in drama/theatre productions. Often considered to be very eccentric and over the top with their outfits and movement and even their speech. The words drama queen come to mind often when thinking of this group.
THE REBELS:
They are generally the type of people who rebel against any authority figure they can. They generally spend their time cutting classes, and have awful academic performance (though not always). They are rarely invited to parties, but are known to show up anyways. They sometimes throw their own, but mostly they just find a good hiding place for small drinking parties for the members of their group. They are considered the "bad boys" and "bad girls" of the school.
THE POOR KIDS:
they smelled bad in elementary school, and now that you're in high school they keep to themselves. but it always seemed like they were having fun playing cards in the cafeteria after school. They tend not to be in many clubs or activities.
THE OUTCASTS & THE ARTY INTELLECTUALS
Generally those who don't dress like everyone else is dressing and, sometimes, have little fashion sense. They are the group with the most artistic inclinations and tend to be the people are aren't really interested in parties and the like. This group tends to remain low key and almost go unnoticed except for their unnatural artistic ability. Unlike the nerds, this group does not require academic performance to be of high standards though they do fall into the middle of the road academically. This lot tend to be (or pretend to be) oblivious of the whole clique system and spend lunches strolling around galleries or reciting poetry.
THE STONERS & THE DRUGGIES:
Baggy clothes, blim burns, nicotine stains, scruffy long hair and an ability to have whole conversations compiled of quotes from slacker movies. They want to be everyone's friend but the feeling's not mutual.
THE DRIFTERS:
No set group, drifters split their time with all the other cliques, and mostly get on with everyone. Easy going and fairly 'normal'.
